Navigating Burnout: An Article for Dental Professionals

In today’s fast-paced and demanding work environment, dental professionals often find themselves susceptible to burnout.

As a dental consultant/leadership coach, I see this happening every single day. The accumulation of responsibilities when running a business can take a toll on your well-being and job satisfaction.

There are high expectations to produce clinically, and pressures to keep pace with the ever-evolving challenges in the dental industry. All of this makes your job extremely stressful.

However, by recognizing that there are signs of burnout and beginning to implement strategies to adapt, cope, and move forward; dentists and practice owners can manage their hardships, regain a sense of fulfillment and balance in their professional lives and personal lives.

  • In a Deloitte survey, 56% of workers say that their managers did not encourage conversations addressing burnout in the workplace.
  • 77% say they have experienced burnout at their current job, with more than half citing more than one occurrence.
  • In another survey done by a published writer on the topic shared; Millennials are the most burned-out generation, with 59% experiencing some symptoms of burnout.

So you see, burnout is common in today’s society. It’s not just dental practice owners and dentist. Running a business is an additional level of stress and responsibility, so it’s important to be aware before it starts affecting your business and health.

Money doesn’t cure burnout

There is only a 6% difference in burnout rates between those who earn $100,000 vs $30,000.  In contrast, by fostering a supportive work culture, setting realistic expectations, empowering employees, encouraging open communication, and recognizing achievements, burnout can be prevented while creating an environment that enhances everyone’s well-being.

So now that we have established that burnout is a real thing, and some of the culprits causing burnout. What are some things that we can do to avoid it and move forward to a more healthy place.

First Step – Identifying Burnout

The first step in addressing burnout is to simply acknowledge its happening and understand the toll or impact it has been taking on your mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Dentists need to look out for signs in themselves as well as their employees. Things to look out for include:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Decreased motivation
  • Cynicism
  • Reduced productivity

Once burnout is recognized, it is crucial to have a conversation with someone about it. Put a plan of action in place to counteract the problems causing burnout.

CreatE A Work-life balance

The relentless pace of the modern work environment can contribute to burnout. To manage this, there are strategies to help you maintain a healthy work-life balance. This includes:

  • establish or reset “realistic” expectations
  • delegate more tasks and duties
  • establish clear boundaries – between work & personal life.

Once you are able to recognize and identify what is causing the burnout, begin prioritizing some “self-care” activities such as:

  • taking regular breaks
  • practicing mindfulness
  • fostering more supportive relationships

These things can help mitigate the negative impact of keeping pace with professional demands.

CREATE A POSITIVE & HEALTH Culture

One thing I have always noticed as a common factor taking place in the dental industry: Practice owners often either do not support their teams to foster better relationships or try too hard to support them. There is no balance there.

As a consultant, currently working with around 70 dentists and their businesses. I have personally witnessed how polarizing and distant practice owners can be personally managing their teams well being. This is probably due to the the stress and expectations placed on dentist’s shoulders as business leaders.

Many dentists pretty much ignore the fact that their teams need to foster a healthy relationship with their place of employment. When teams are more supported and engaged dentists can expect less stress and difficulty themselves! On the other hand some dentists are on the complete opposite side of the spectrum. They spare no expense in trying to take care of their team members. But sadly, those are the ones who overdo it and unfortunately employees tend to take advantage of them.

But those who do not invest any time or attention, and do nothing, are constantly upset when team members do not take ownership or personal accountability. So, I think there needs to be a healthy balance! That goes the same for taking care of yourself as well. It is a very important fact we all need to pay attention to in workplace environments – emotional recalibration and support. Think of creative ways you can create loyalty and support others. These types of activities helps reduce burnout for everyone! You included.

A great article published by Gusto provides a fun list of activities to foster a more engaging team environment. It’s definitely worth trying out, sharing, or passing along.

How to Personally Cope with Burnout

Coping with burnout requires a holistic approach that addresses both the professional and personal aspects. Adopt the following various strategies to manage stress and promote well-being:

  • Regular exercise or walks
  • Take time out for mindfulness meditative practices
  • Actively engaging in personal hobbies or activities.

Participate in activities that bring joy and relaxation helps alleviate burnout. Seek support from friends, family, or professional communities. Consider therapy or even a personal development coach that can provide you with proactive and invaluable guidance. Establish a fresh perspective outside your routine blinders.

Moving Forward from Burnout and Seeking Growth

Burnout for dental professionals often arises from a sense of stagnation or lack of fulfillment in one’s career. To move forward, dental professionals should evaluate their personal and professional goals and aspirations.

This may involve seeking new challenges, acquiring new skills or qualifications. It could also mean exploring new professional development paths. Engage in continuous learning and professional development to reignite your passion and new found inspiration. Explore open doors to new opportunities for personal and career growth. Maybe start thinking about expanding your practice and starting up a new location or adding on a specialty as a partnership!

WORK WITH A PROFESSIONAL & PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT COACH

Burnout hinders growth and also tears people or relationships apart. Being a professional business coach who came from the corporate world, I have witnessed and experienced burnout myself.

I also see how dentists in private practice are constantly pushed to produce without much personal fulfillment, emotionally or monetarily. I see first hand how docs become dental practice owners, but can’t quite figure out how to create the best systems and foster a collaborative team in a healthy work environment.

With all of that said, we want to offer a solution! Working with me and my team at NEXT LEVEL CONSULTANTS, with the help of a trusted advisor you can gain insights on how to move forward beyond the roadblocks holding you back – burning you out.
